As part of a project for a client in the automotive industry, Viautomation Ltd. designed and built a fully automated machine for component assembly and inspection. The system was developed with a focus on high productivity, process repeatability, and 100% quality traceability. The machine consists of four sequential workstations integrating a FANUC industrial robot, SMC pneumatic and electric components, an Atlas Copco automatic screwdriver, IFM laser sensors, and a Keyence machine vision system.
At the first station, the operator loads the components into a fixture designed and manufactured by us. A Keyence industrial vision camera performs verification of correct orientation and the presence of all components. The software analyzes the image in real time and allows the part to proceed to the next operation only if it has been loaded correctly.
At the second station, a FANUC industrial robot performs precise grease application using an automated greasing unit. The quantity is controlled through a parameterized dosing system. After grease application, the robot completes a partial assembly and transfers the component to the next station.
At the third station, SMC pneumatic manipulators perform the final mechanical assembly of the component. At this stage, grease is applied to a different part of the assembly according to the technological requirements.
After the operation, an industrial vision system verifies the presence and correct quantity of grease, as well as the proper positioning of the component. The system ensures that only parts meeting the defined quality criteria proceed to the next operation.
At the fourth station, an Atlas Copco automatic screwdriver performs controlled tightening with torque and angle monitoring. A manipulator built with SMC pneumatic cylinders and an electric actuator extracts the finished part.
Approved components are transferred to a conveyor, while rejected parts are sorted into a dedicated red reject box. The number of rejected parts is counted by an IFM laser sensor, ensuring accurate production statistics and traceability.
The project also included 3D printed grippers and fixtures made from industrial-grade materials suitable for production environments.
The main advantage of 3D printed grippers is safety — in the event of a robot crash or blockage, the gripper can fail first, protecting both the component and the more expensive equipment.
For fixtures, 3D printing enables fast and cost-effective manufacturing, particularly when aluminum machining would require significantly longer lead times. However, the choice of technology always depends on the specific application, loads, and component dimensions — 3D printing is not suitable in every case.
